How do you know if your computer is completely secure? Well, that depends on what kind of security applications that you have installed to your system. Antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware, do you have them all in your system? Moreover, you need to know the proper way to use your computer so that you don’t lure malicious software or other threats into your system.
To find out how secure is your computer, you might want to use a tool like OPSWAT Security Score Beta. It’s a free and lightweight application that helps scan your computer for the status of your installed security applications. At the end of the scan, the tool will tell you your security score along with recommendations on how to improve both the score and the overall security of your device.
Security Score requires no installation as it is portable. This is the main interface. Simply check the box to indicate that you agree to the terms and conditions, then hit the blue color Start button to start the scanning process.
The tool uses its OESIS framework to scan your computer for the presence of seven types of applications on your system, namely antivirus, antiphishing, backup tool, patch management, firewall, public file sharing and hard disk encryption. The tool will then obtain information about the current status of all the mentioned applications and generate your security score.
We got a security score 86 out of possible 100 from the test. We scored a big zero under hard disk encryption category and 2 points for public file sharing.
According to the developer, the score calculation is based on security industry and market research reports, over ten years of expertise in the security field, and feedback from leading security technology vendors on the relative importance of the categories and status of security software.
Take the antivirus for example, the score that you get is determined by the brand that you installed. The VIPRE Antivirus 2013 that we’ve on our system is a silver certified antivirus on OPSWAT, therefore didn’t get full score under this category. Note that you can detailed information for each category by clicking on the corresponding score from the main interface.
On the category that you didn’t score well. Simply click on the score to learn how to improve both the score and the security of your device.
For public file sharing category, you can get full score if you remove such application from your system. However, it depends on you whether to keep or remove file sharing applications like uTorrent, Bitcomet etc. If you decide to remove them, you can use AppRemover 3.0, another handy program from OPSWAT. It will completely uninstall file sharing application from your system.
