2011 has been the year that the Tablet PC has truly come into its own. This innovative device first launched by Apple with its iPad a little over one year ago, is now available in quite a few different variations and flavours with many different manufacturers vying for a piece of this lucrative sector.

While the price point of these units is still fairly high, deals are available (primarily through Mobile Broadband providers looking to secure new customers) and it is possible to not only get Tablets at a significant discount but also obtain free laptops upon signing a multi-year commitment.

With the multitude of new Tablet PCs on the scene however, choosing the right one to suit your needs is not only restricted to Operating system – Apple iOs versus Google Android – but is also a factor of Screen Size, Memory and Processing Power. In addition, battery life must be a consideration as one of the Tablets key strengths is its ability to work for extended periods of time unfettered, in comparison to Laptops.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer

The Transformer is one of the newer breed of Android Tablets on the market. Running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) which has been customized to work better on Tablet PCs the Transformer features a 10 inch screen and an extremely responsive dual core processor. This processor coupled with the enhancements inherent in Android 3.0 versus its predecessors makes using the Tablet a breeze. However the most exciting and innovative feature of the Transformer really has nothing to do with the Tablet itself but is rather based on one of its peripherals. The Transformer has the ability to “dock” into an almost full sized keyboard, transforming this Tablet into a fully fledged notebook. Not only does this keyboard dock almost double the battery life of the Transformer, but it also provides it with additional connection options!

Archos 9

Archos has long been the leader in media devices for the consumer market and their newest device incorporates those media capabilities into a device that is able to offer so much more. The Archos 9 has an 8.9inch screen (which is somewhat on the small side) but with 60GB of internal memory it far exceeds any of the other tablets in regards to storage capabilities. In addition with the inclusion of Windows 7, the Archos allows for seamless integration of applications, documents and files between the Tablet and your desktop.

iPad 2

While Android with its new Honeycomb operating system and Windows are both contenders for the crown, the current King of the Tablet throne is Apple and its iPad 2. This lightweight device runs the Apple iOS and with a dual core processor and the largest library of apps available it will not be easy to beat. Sporting an impressive 1024×768 pixel display in a lighter and thinner package, the iPad 2 is not only much faster than the original iPad, but also offers increased battery life and both front and rear facing camera’s allowing for even greater interaction.
