It is rare to see a computer without an internet connection. Well, if you can’t get your computer online, imagine how much stuffs that you’ve already missed (and will miss), say for example, you can’t bring the latest patches and security updates to your Microsoft Windows OS or Office software suite. And most importantly, you can’t get your daily read on My Tech Quest. Okay, just kidding! 🙂
Is there any method to get those updates for your system without requiring internet connection? Well, you bet there is. Introducing the WSUS Offline Update, a portable and lightweight application for Windows that will help you to run Windows and Microsoft Office updates, on computers that always work offline.
This is the main interface of WSUS Offline Update, which looks a little too crowded with load of options. Never mind the awful interface. Let’s see how to put the application to work.
Did we mention that you need to run WSUS Offline Update on computer with internet connection, and not on the always-works-offline computer? This way, you will be able to download the required updates for Windows as well as Microsoft Office, from the internet (of course). Then, transfer and install the updates on target computer (the one with no internet connection).
Under the Windows tab, choose the version of Windows and the interface language of your choice. Available Windows include both 32-bit and 64-bit of Windows XP, Server 2003, Vista and Windows 7.
Meanwhile for Office updates, choose your version – Office 2003, 2007 or 2010 (there is option to download updates for all the three versions), and the interface language.
Next, choose the medium to store the updates files – either in USB drive or save it as ISO image, which you can burn it to CD or DVD later. Once done, hit the Start button to start downloading the updates.
The download is in progress.
After the download has completed (which could takes a while), you can then continue with the installation part on target computer. Find and launch the UpdateInstaller.exe from the updates files (in USB drive or CD/DVD). Select your desired updates and hit Start to install the updates.
