VIPRE Antivirus 2013 Review – In the past, we’ve reviewed the previous two versions of the VIPRE Antivirus. You can read our reviews on VIPRE Antivirus Home 4.0 here and VIPRE Antivirus 2012 here. Today, we shall take a look at the latest 2013 version of the security solution. We will walk your through the installation process and highlight the enhancements and new features that are included in VIPRE Antivirus 2013.
By the way, VIPRE Antivirus 2013 made its debut worldwide on September 18 alongside with VIPRE Internet Security 2013.
Read on for more details.
Installation – Smooth and Simple
VIPRE Antivirus 2013 is now easier to install than ever, thanks to the new VIPRE Easy Install feature. The feature ensures a smooth and trouble-free installation process by eliminating any possible security software conflicts. Overall, the installation process in VIPRE Antivirus 2013 still looks very similar to its 2012 version.
You will first greeted with a window similar to the screenshot below when you run the installer. Insert the product key if you have purchased the software or if you wish to run the security software on free trial, leave the product key blank, then click on the “Agree and Continue” button. Guess what, this is the only button that you click during installation.
After that, everything runs by itself. The installer will first download the setup installer of VIPRE Antivirus 2013, then install it on your computer, follow by downloading the virus definition files and finally perform the first virus scan on your system.
The next thing you know the security software is now successfully installed on your system. In our test, the whole installation process took around 10 minutes. Well, your internet speed will determine how long the process will take.
Finally, click Explore VIPRE button to access the main interface of VIPRE Antivirus 2013. Note that you join ThreatNet by default. It’s a a user sharing community that share potentially dangerous program files. So just leave it checked. 🙂
What’s New in VIPRE Antivirus 2013?
This is the main interface of VIPRE Antivirus 2013 with yet another face-lift. The updated interface looks even cleaner and simple than before. In fact, the interface does somehow matches the metro style in Windows 8. And yes, this version has full compatibility with Windows 8. 🙂
Generally, everything is still intact. From the main window, you get to see details like the scan status (the date and time of the last scan and next scheduled scan), status of active and email protection (both are enabled by default), status of threat definitions, subscription expiry date and the number of risks that VIPRE has protected you from. There is a set of tabs at the top right, namely Overview, Scan, Manage and Tools.
In addition to that, VIPRE 2013 improves the main user interface in several places, including the Settings dialog box, additional menu options, improved links to GFI technical support, and shortcut keys to commonly accessed functionality.
Like previous versions, VIPRE Antivirus 2013 has minimal impact on system resources, therefore it works smoothly on any system (high, middle or low-end computers). In the Scan window, you are given three scan options – Quick, Deep or Custom scan. Surprisingly, VIPRE only takes up not more than 5MB of memory while running a deep scan on our computer.
In our test, the deep scan took 2 hours 43 minutes and 2 seconds to complete. It scanned close to 400k file or 190GB worth of data. The best part is the security software will automatically carry out the recommended actions on the malware found.
Moreover, you can instruct VIPRE Antivirus 2013 to automatically turn off the computer after completion of scan. In addition to that, VIPRE Rapid Scan (previously known as Fast Second Scan) is now on by default for manual and scheduled scans. Also, the scanning engine is enhanced with a re-designed anti-rootkit technology. The advanced feature now offers greater protection against rootkits with even faster detection.
Last but not least, it’s now easier to keep VIPRE Antivirus 2013 up-to-date as well. There is a new Manage VIPRE Update panel that displays information about VIPRE and threat definitions being used.
VIPRE Antivirus 2013 can be purchased at $39.99 a copy for one PC. By adding another $20, you can give VIPRE protection on up to 10 PCs. VIPRE antivirus offers a free 15 days trial and works with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of XP SP2 (or later), Vista SP1 (or later), Windows 7 and Windows 8.
