VIPRE Antivirus 2012 is one of the key software products from GFI Software. It combines antivirus and antispyware modules to provide advanced protection against the latest malicious threats including viruses, spyware, rootkits, bots, trojans and more, thanks to its single but powerful anti-malware engine.
The best part is that the security software won’t slow down your system. You may not experience much difference on a high-end system. But to an old computer with low-end processor and small-sized memory, VIPRE Antivirus 2012 could easily regarded as the favourite security software for these system.
VIPRE Antivirus 2012 Review
In VIPRE Antivirus 2012, the developer has decided to simplify the already simple installation process. The number of steps required to get the security software installed has been greatly reduced. In the previous version, you are required to configure email protection and ThreatNet (a user sharing community that share potentially dangerous program files). Well, you don’t have to configure those in this version. 🙂
You will see the installation window similar to the screenshot below when you run the installer file (at about 28MB). Insert the product key or if you wish to run the security software on free trial, leave the product key blank, then hit the “Agree and Continue”. Surprisingly, this is the only button that you need to click during installation.
The installer will check for newer version of VIPRE Antivirus 2012, run virus definition file update and then perform the first virus scan on your system without your interference. Yes, we are getting to like VIPRE for its simplicity.
This is the main window of VIPRE Antivirus 2012. It has a redesigned interface that looks much simpler and cleaner than the previous version. From the main window, you get to see details like the scan status (the date and time of the last scan and next scheduled scan), status of active and email protection (both are enabled by default), subscription expiry date, the number of risks that VIPRE has protected you from (9 so far on our system) and more.
Non-technical users shouldn’t find any trouble to navigate the security software. The main menu is at the top left while there is a set of tabs on the right.
You can choose to run one of the three scan options – Quick, Deep or Custom scan. You can instruct VIPRE Antivirus 2012 to automatically turn off the computer after completion of scan.
The security software supports scanning for removable devices such as USB drives and memory cards. You will be prompt to run virus scan when you insert such device into your computer.
Looking at other features. The active protection provides real-time monitoring and protection on your system against malware threats. On the other hand, email protection guards you against email viruses and phishing scams, with direct support for Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail and any email program that uses POP3 and SMTP (like Thunderbird etc).
Under the Tools tab, you can find additional system tools like a secure file eraser, a history cleaner and a PC Explorer. Why don’t you explore all the tools on your own. 🙂
To sum it up, VIPRE Antivirus 2012 works smoothly on any system (high, middle or low-end computers) with minimal impact on system resources. Under new simplified interface, you can carry out virus scanning task more effectively and feel free to run other tasks on your computer while running a full virus scan. Don’t worry, there is enough processor power for everyone.
VIPRE Antivirus 2012 can be purchased at $39.95 a copy (for one PC), $49.95 for 2 PCs and $59.95 for the use on up to 10 PCs. VIPRE antivirus offers a free 15 days trial and works with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Server (2000, 2003 and 2008), XP, Vista, and Windows 7. It does not support Windows 8, just not yet.
