Google Unveils Cr-48, the First Chrome OS Laptop1 min read

In the Google Chrome OS special event yesterday, we have seen the official launch of the Chrome OS and also the Google Chrome Webstore. Not just that, Google also unveils the first Chrome OS laptop, called the Cr-48 Chrome Notebook. But don’t get too excited yet, cos the Chrome OS laptop (won’t be Cr-48) will only make debut to the market as early as mid of 2011.

The Cr-48 comes in black with 12.1-inch screen, is currently a test notebook that Google designed for a Pilot program. Through its Chrome OS Pilot Program, Google will distribute the Chrome OS Notebook (limited units) exclusively to participants in the program. In return, the participant will test out the Chrome OS and provide detailed feedback to Google.

FYI, the Pilot program is open to individuals, businesses, schools, non-profits and developers based in the United States. If you are interested to try out, you can apply for the program here.

Specification of the Cr-48

  • 12.1-inch LCD screen display
  • Full size keyboard
  • Oversized touchpad
  • Qualcomm Gobi 3G chip for Verizon data in the US, your carrier of choice internationally
  • 802.11n dual-band WiFi
  • 8+ hours of active use
  • 8+ days of standby
  • Webcam
  • Flash storage
  • 3.8 pounds

The Cr-48 will most probably won’t make it to the market as the laptop is purely use for testing. On the other hand, retail Chrome OS models from Acer and Samsung will be available in the middle of 2011 for the masses. So let’s the countdown begins! 🙂

At the mean time, take a look at the guided video tour below, to learn exactly what it’s like to use a Chrome notebook, from start(up) to finish.
