Top 5 common problems with Windows RT3 min read

Windows RT for Surface Tablets

What is Windows RT?

It is quite well known that in terms of operating systems, Microsoft’s next big product is Windows 8. But even before Windows 8, Microsoft introduced another operating system known as Windows RT. This OS is normally developed for the likes of Surface Tablets and other similar devices. Although the resemblance between Windows RT and Windows 8 is uncanny, there is a major difference between the two.

Windows RT for Surface Tablets

Windows RT is primarily designed for performing over ARM chips. ARM chips are more power-efficient and provide power to tablets and smartphones type of devices. Many consider Windows RT as a ‘lighter’ version of Windows 8. So, as a consequence there are some drawbacks with it.

The top 5 common problems with Windows RT are discussed below.

No Backward Compatibility:

One of the primary concerns of potential buyers of Windows RT device is the issue with backward compatibility. Many old applications that used to run on previous versions of Windows are not supported by Windows RT. Applications like Adobe Photoshop and games like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft are not being offered by this operating system. The support of Google Chrome is not there either. Add to that, these devices only allow flash in some of the certified websites.

Exclusivity of Windows apps:

Another annoying little hitch is that software bought from outside stores will not run on your device. Windows RT only supports software and applications that are purchased from Windows Store. Even software for Windows 8 are not supported by Windows RT. Compared with Google’s Android, this is a big drawback. So, people need to think again before purchasing any device that runs on Windows RT.

Less number of apps:

Although Microsoft promised there would be more than 100,000 applications and software available on Windows Store, they are yet to fulfill that promise. The current count of apps on Windows Store is way below that mark. Plus, some of the traditional Windows applications are not available either. Windows Media Player and Microsoft Outlook are examples.

Bundled with the device:

Windows RT are not available on its own. This means whenever you need to install Windows RT you got to buy the whole new device. This operating system is bundled with the devices that run on this OS. One will not be able to upgrade their personal computer to Windows RT. They can only buy a new device or use Windows 8 instead. Add to that, the desktop mode of Windows RT is also restricted to Microsoft produced desktop software only.

The licence:

The licensing of Windows RT is also pretty much constricted within student and home uses. So, for office works, these Windows RT devices are not perfectly suitable so to speak. The exclusion of Outlook can be a problem. Also, you need to buy the licence for office works. Besides, the number of devices that get operated by Windows RT is also quite less. Only a handful of big companies are planning to launch Windows RT devices.

Well, even though there are some problems with this operating system, it is still safe to proclaim that this OS is still a good one and certainly is worth a try.
