When it comes to retro games, the iPhone has a vast array of titles available to whisk players back to days when hair was long and attention spans were short. Titles range from classic standards to 80’s console games. When it comes to the best of the best, there are 8 retro games titles that are simply must haves for all game enthusiasts.

Let’s check them out!

1. Pong

It’s hard to go wrong with a good, old fashioned game of pong. Released in 1972, this is one of the earliest video games ever. This fun retro game brings back memories of the first Atari and the amazing wow factor that video games first ushered in. This classic will bring back old memories while entertaining for hours.

2. Frogger

Used as a demonstration to children of the dangers of crossing the street for decades now, this game is always a treat to play. The goal remains the same: to navigate little Frogger the Frog across the highway without getting flattened into a frog-pancake. First introduced in 1981 by Konami, this game holds a solid place in the hearts of gamers everywhere.

3. Pac-Man

It’s highly doubtful that there is a child of the 70’s or 80’s anywhere who did not at one time have the Pac-Man pattern memorized. The goal of this timeless classic is to navigate Pac-Man through the maze, eating tasty little dots and fruit while avoiding menacing ghosties. Since its debut in 1980, this game has firmly become a classic.

4. Space Invaders

There is hardly a more noble cause than zapping aliens into oblivion, and this game allows iPhone users to do just that. As with the original version, the iPhone version involves a small, triangular space ship which moves side to side shooting laser beams at the enemy ships.

5. Super Breakout

In this classic, players are given a screen with rows of bricks that must be broken by bouncing a ball off a moving platform controlled by the player. The original Breakout was originally launched in 1976, and has an interesting back-story.

For Apple fans, it’s very interesting to note that Breakout for Atari was originally assigned to Steve Jobs himself for development. Jobs, in turn, asked friend Steve Wozniak for help and four days later, Breakout was born. However, the design produced by Wozniak was unusable by Atari for technical reasons and Atari went on to design their own version of the game.

6. Galaga

This game allows players piloting a spacecraft to shoot laser beams at approaching alien craft, which appear in more and more difficult formations as the game progresses. First released in 1979, this long time favourite belongs in any retro gaming library.

7. Pole Position

This classic racing game has taught generations how to drive, and is a most welcomed addition to the iPhone game market. Originally released in 1982 by Atari, this game set the standard for future racing games, and remains a classic.

8. Dig Dug

Another well-loved classic, Dig Dug burrows through the ground, dropping rocks and inflating enemies to smite them. An arcade favourite, the modern, mobile version of this game for the iPhone allows players to advance all the way to level 500, whereas the arcade version stopped at level 255.

Retro games invoke fond, fun memories and offer up hours of entertaining game play.

Gamers of all ages will enjoy playing these favourites on their iPhone.
