How to Show Unread Messages Count in Gmail’s Favicon?1 min read

Google has added a new lab feature to Gmail, called the “Unread message icon“. As the name suggests, the feature enables you to see the number of unread messages that are in your Gmail inbox, right from the Gmail’s favicon in your browser tab.

This feature is useful especially when you have tonnes of tabs opened on your browser, that you can hardly find out the number of unread messages from the title of your Gmail tab. Also, if you have Gmail pinned to your browser tab, the unread messages count is entirely hidden from the tab.

By enabling the new Gmail Lab Unread Message Icon, you can tell at a glance how many unread messages are in your inbox by simply looking at the Gmail tab’s icon.

To activate the feature, click the green flask icon at the top of Gmail to bring up the Gmail Labs option page.

Under the Unread message icon option, click on the Enable button and then click Save Changes for the feature to take effect.

This lab feature only works with Chrome (version 6 and above) and Firefox (version 2 and above).
