Intel Malaysia’s effort to become more energy efficient doesn’t go unnoticed as the company was recently recognised by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) at KeTTHA Industry Awards (KIA) 2013 for outstanding achievements in energy efficiency, conservation and cost saving.

“Intel incorporates environmental performance goals throughout its operations, seeking continuous improvements in energy efficiency, emissions reductions, resource conservation and other areas. Here at Intel Malaysia we have maintained a significant level of initiatives aimed at creating a positive impact on the environment,” said Robin Martin, Managing Director Intel Malaysia. “We are very privileged to have been accorded recognition for our efforts with this Energy Efficiency Management Excellence Award.”

“In the past two years, we have implemented more than 50 energy conservation projects which reduced energy usage by as much as 28 million kWh,” said Martin. “We have also generated very encouraging results in other areas of environmental conservation including water conservation and solid waste recycling. For instance, we saved over 500,000 m3 of fresh water over the past two years thanks to the installation of high efficiency faucets, rain water harvesting and the recycling of water in our cooling tower system.”

Excellence in Energy Efficiency

All Intel Malaysia’s factory buildings in Penang and Kulim are LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, under the Green Building Rating System for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance Category (EBOM). This internationally-recognized approval from the U.S. Green Building Council verifies the sustainable systems in place and the ‘green’ improvements made to the factory building and operations.

  • KM1 facility (Assembly Test Factory and Office) was the first existing Intel factory to have been awarded the (LEED) certification in 2010
  • KM2 building (Assembly Test Factory, Laboratory and Office), certified Silver level in 2011.
  • This was followed by the certification of Intel Malaysia’s KM5 building in April 2013, with a LEED Gold Certification. This is a breakthrough achievement as KM5 is the 1st Assembly, Test and Manufacturing (ATM) factory and the 1st existing semiconductor factory in Malaysia to be Gold-certified under the EBOM category.
  • Most recently, the PG8 building in Penang became the 1st legacy ATM factory to be Gold-certified in June 2013. PG8 was built in 1997 with minimal environmental design.

Both Intel Penang and Kulim Offices have also received Green Office Certification from the Penang Green Council.

P.S. : Congrats to Intel Malaysia on the recognition. 🙂
