DiGi Telecommunications has unveiled the first ever mobile wireless portable router to the market in Malaysia, called the MiFi (stand for Mobile Wi-Fi).
MiFi is about the size of a typical mobile phone and comes with a SIM card slot plus also a MicroSD card slot. MiFi works in a similar way to any ADSL wireless router at home. The MiFi device transmits a WiFi signal and allows you to share your mobile broadband connection with others.
You can connect up to five different WiFi-enabled devices simultaneously like the iPad, iPod Touch, PSP, Netbook, Laptop, WiFi enabled cameras etc, to the MiFi.
Celcom has the similar device, called the Wireless Gateway (I’m using it now). The difference is that Wireless Gateway is not portable and the device is triple the size of MiFi. It is best used at home. You don’t want to bring along your power adapter when you want to surf the net outside, right?
In contrast, you can bring the MiFi on the go because the device is powered by battery and it fits perfectly in your pocket. It weighs only 90g. On a full charge, MiFi can last between 4 to 5 hours.
Pre-Order Your MiFi device
Interested users can start pre-order the MiFi wireless router via the DiGi’s Facebook Fan Page at http://facebook.com/mydigi. The pre-ordering will end on June 20 and special offers await the early birds. Don’t worry, you are not obliged to purchase the MiFi even though you’ve submitted the pre-order form.
How much does a MiFi costs?
DiGi did not revealed the pricing details about the MiFi device. The pricing details will be published on DiGi MiFi official page on the launch date (which is also unknown). To those who have pre-order the MiFi device, you will be notified soon via email on the pricing details for the MiFi.
Now, with MiFi, you can create Wi-Fi hotspot on the go.
