According to GlobalWebIndex data on global smartphone users in Q2 of 2013, Google Maps tops the list with 54% usage, follows by Facebook and Youtube with 44% and 35% usage respectively.
WeChat cross platform messaging app is ranked fifth in the most used apps in the world at 27% of usage, which has surpassed WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Skype, and Instagram in global popularity. Facebook Messenger, Skype and Twitter tally in at 22% each; WhatsApp ranks ninth at 17%, and Instagram takes tenth place at 11%.
WeChat has more than 70 million active users outside China. In China alone, there are more than 300 million registered user accounts under the brand name Weixin. That’s 370 million users combined. Its rival, Whatsapp Messenger has more than 300 million users. The latest version of Whatsapp features a new hold-to-talk voice messaging, a feature that is available in WeChat since 2011.
