WeChat, a leading cross platform social messaging app, is in the limelight again. Last August, the app was ranked fifth in the most-used smartphone apps in the world according to GlobalWebIndex data on global smartphone users in Q2 of 2013.
This time, GlobalWebIndex has reported a staggering 1021% increase in usage of WeChat among youths aged 16 to 19 worldwide between Q1 and Q3 of 2013, thus making the social app as the fastest growing app in the category. The list is followed by Vine (639%) and then Flickr (254%).
The chart below looks at the change in active usage of social services and mobile apps of teens aged 16-19 globally, excluding China.
With over 100 million registered user accounts in international markets, WeChat has become the most downloaded social communication app in many markets. In Malaysia, WeChat now boasts a 90% penetration rate in local market amongst its smartphone users and it’s bullish that it will continue its strong momentum to recruit and retain new users with its innovative approach to create value and meaningful interaction with their friends, family and favorite brands.
