Facebook has made a surprise move to get more users to use its Messenger app by allowing non-Facebook users to use the app. Yes, the Messenger app, starting with Android (later iOS), is now open to all users whether or not you have a Facebook account.

The latest update to Facebook Messenger app (v2.2.1) lets you register a Messenger account by just providing your name and phone number. After successful registration, you can start messaging your mobile contacts. Hey, this sounds like Whatsapp.

The feature has started rolling out to initially a few countries including India, Indonesia, Venezuela, Australia and South Africa. Other countries shall receive the feature soon. Meanwhile, iOS users have to wait a little longer before they can sign up the app with just name and phone number.
