The next generation of Apple’s mobile operating system, the iOS 6, will be available for download (as free update) on existing iOS devices starting September 19 (in the US) and September 20 for users in Malaysia.

iOS 6 brings over 200 new features your iOS devices. Among the notable features include all new Maps app with Apple-designed cartography and turn-by-turn navigation, Facebook integration, Passbook organization, shared photo streams, camera with panorama feature and even more Siri features and languages.

Ahead of the iOS 6 launch tomorrow, here’s a couple of reminders that you might want to note. So that when the Apple’s mobile OS is live and available for download, you can update your iOS device to iOS 6 painlessly.

1. In addition to iPhone 5 and fifth generation of iPod touch, the iOS 6 is compatible with  iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2, fourth generation of the iPod touch.

2. iOS 6 is delivered over-the-air (OTA) to iOS-6-compatible devices.

3. Get iTunes 10.7 on your PC or Mac. Only this version of iTunes supports iOS 6.

4. Before upgrade to iOS 6, it’s always a good idea to backup your data to your computer via sync cable, or send them to the cloud (to iCloud).

5. Also, you might want to disable Restrictions in your iOS device before upgrade.  Without Restrictions disabled your iOS device may encounter issues to transfer purchases, backup or sync with your computer. To disable Restrictions, go to Settings > General > Restrictions.

6. Will the iOS 6 available when the clock strikes midnight? Most probably not. The most likely arrival time will be on 10AM PST/1PM EST. In Malaysia Time (GMT+8), it will be 2 am on September 20. iOS 5 and iOS 4 were both available for download at the same hour in last year and the two years back.

7. Not all devices will receive the same new features available in iOS 6. Older devices will receive the least features. Here’s a quick rundown of which devices will be getting the features.

  • Siri: iPhone 4S, new iPad
  • Flyover: iPhone 4S, iPad 2, new iPad
  • Photo Stream: iPhone 4, 4S, iPad 2, new iPad
  • FaceTime Over 3G: iPhone 4S, new iPad
  • VIP List: iPhone 4, 4S, iPad 2, new iPad
