Previously only available for Blackberry devices, the Blackberry Messenger or better known as BBM will become a cross-platform messenger app when the app becomes available to Android as free download today at 7AM EDT (or 7pm Malaysian time) and BBM for iPhone on September 22, also free.
Let’s take a look at the features of BBM. First and foremost, as a messenger app, you can send and receive messages instantly with friends on Android, iPhone and Blackberry smartphones. Besides messages, you can share files with your friends such as photos and voice notes.
Like other cross-platform messenger app like Whatsapp and WeChat, you can also engage multi-person chats. The BBM Groups lets you invite up to 30 friends to chat together Also sharing photos and schedules among your group members. Plus, with Broadcast Message, you can send a message out to all your BBM contacts at once.
On top of that, BBM lets you post a personal message, profile picture and your current status, and lets your contacts know instantly in Updates. Every registered BBM user is given a unique BB PIN, at which friends can add you to their contacts using BB Pin.
Note that not all features of BBM is made available to Android and iPhone. BBM Video calling and BBM Voice calling will hit both versions in future version.
BBM for Android is compatible with devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, while the iPhone version is available for devices running iOS 6 and the newly-launched iOS 7.
