A normal free account at Dropbox only gives you 2GB of free cloud storage. Is it enough for you? Not enough? How about we add another 23 GB to the usual 2GB to make it a total of 25GB of free Dropbox storage?
No kidding, the people at XDA developers have successfully extracted the Dropbox apk from the HTC One X and modify it to work on any Android device. FYI, the HTC One X is pre-installed with Dropbox app that offers 25GB of free space for two years.
To get the additional 23GB free storage for two years, you need to download (from here) and install the modified apk on your Android device. If you already have Dropbox installed on your Android device, you must Clear data, Force close and finally uninstall it from Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Dropbox.
Here’s the step-by-step instructions to install the app.
- First, connect your Android device (mount as disk drive) via USB to the computer and copy the downloaded apk file to your Android device.
- After disconnected your Android device from computer, browse for the apk file in your Android device. You need a file explorer like ASTRO File Manager to do so.
- Once the apk file is found, tap of the file and follow the on screen instructions to install the modified Dropbox app. Note that before install, you need to check the “Unknown Sources” option from Settings > Applications or Settings > Security (on Ice Cream Sandwich).
- Next, launch the app as usual and log in. Wait for the confirmation email. The confirmation email can take up to 30 mins.
Walla, now you 25GB of free storage on your Dropbox account! After getting the extra space, you can switch back to official Dropbox app (you need to uninstall the modified Dropbox first).
