Let’s face it: our lives are connected to the Internet whether we want them to be or not. From our mobile phones to our TVs, more and more gadgets are becoming available with the phrase “WiFi-enabled” and with ever increasing broadband speeds and availability there are more and more weird and wonderful broadband gadgets hitting the shelves (or virtual shelves in many cases).
So where can you expect to find devices that connect us to the Internet? Why, the oddest places, of course.
1. WiFi Detector Hat & Shirt
Determining whether WiFi is available in an area usually means flipping open a device and performing a search for various hotspots. It can be tedious, especially if it’s an area you’re unfamiliar with.
You can remedy the problem by wearing the WiFi Detector Hat or Shirt, which has a small device connected that will display WiFi signal and strength. Of course, there’s no way to know whether the service is encrypted or not, so maybe you’ll still need that device after all.
2. Infinite USB Drive
Seems impossible, right? I mean, storage devices always have some sort of capacity. This device utilizes WiFi to allow for storage and transfer of content between two computers across a WiFi network. It’s unique because it’s a WiFi bridge that requires minimal setup and will work on any type of device, no matter the operating system.
3. EcoRoamer Survival RV
There’s nothing worse than being stuck somewhere without WiFi, unless you have a vehicle that has its own WiFi signal. That’s exactly what the EcoRoamer is, in addition to featuring a NASA designed water purification system for those long hours you spend out on the road by yourself. At least you can check your Facebook page.
4. SmartHouse Home Automation
This one is like something out of the Jetsons. Everyone has experienced the pain of getting home late at night and fumbling in the dark for five minutes trying to find they keyhole for the door, only to get inside and fumble around for another five minutes trying to find the light switch.
This device uses WiFi and your mobile phone to automate the task of turning on lights within the house so that with the touch of a button, you can turn out the security light outside, have the kitchen lights ready when you go in, and optionally set a pot of coffee on if you’re not ready for sleep just yet.
5. Eye-Fi Geo X2
The Eye-Fi is a snazzy SD card that makes taking pictures a much more interactive experience. When plugged into any compatible camera, when pictures are snapped, the Eye-Fi will geotag them and then when WiFi is detected, the card will automatically upload the pictures to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, or another service of your choice.
Those long days of sitting in front of the computer choosing which pictures to upload are over, since the world will see everything you snap, as soon as you snap it with this SD card. The only downside is the Eye-Fi is only available in 4GB sizes which means snapping full 1080p pictures is pretty limited.
