Npackd is a Windows App Manager with Over 300 Applications for Install

Installing an application on Windows is never a difficult task. You just need to head over to the official page of that particular application (or from websites that provide software downloads like Softpedia), download the installer and install it on your computer. But how about you need to install multiple applications on your computer, say for example, 10 applications? Do you want to repeat the above process for ten times? Certainly not, right?

So what do you suggest? Okay, I suggest you give Npackd a try. This open-source application works like an app manager for Windows, which enables you to install application with just a single click. Within Npackd, you can find over 300 applications to install with. Some of the commonly-used applications include 7-Zip, Adobe Reader, CCleaner, Defraggler, Firefox, Google Chrome, VLC Media Player, just to name a few.

In the main window, you will see all the available freeware applications (over 1000 items) listed in the main section. At the left sidebar, you can filter the applications by status : All, Not Installed, Installed, Installed, Updateable, and Newest or Installed. Under the All status, you will see all the applications with newest as well as older versions.

If you want to install only the latest version, choose the “Newest or Installed” option. The list will shrink down to only 300 items. You can search for the application that you want to install, or just scroll through the list of applications.

To install an application, just select that particular application, then hit the Install button from the toolbar. The installation will start instantly and is completely automated. The next thing you know, the application has already installed on your computer.

To uninstall an application, you just select the application that you want to uninstall, then hit the Uninstall button from the toolbar. Same with the installation process, uninstallation is also completely automated.

The HTC Desire S is currently the only smartphone that I’m using. The device is running the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and is expected to receive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update some time later this year. Well, I can’t wait to try out the ICS OS myself.

But do you know that you can experience the Android 4.0 ICS OS directly from your computer, without the need to get an actual device that runs ICS. You can actually run Android 4.0 ICS in virtualization on various operating systems – Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. To learn how to get the whole thing runs, please read the tutorial below.

How to Run Android 4.0 ICS on Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris?

First of all, you need to download the Oracle VM VirtualBox (from here). The application is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris OS.

This application will enable you to setup a virtual machine on your computer. Virtual machine (according to Wikipedia) is referring to a completely isolated guest OS installation within a normal host OS. In this case, you will be running the Android 4.0 ICS on either Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris OS.

After download, install VirtualBox on your system.

Next, after the successful installation of VirtualBox, you need to head over to this link to download a copy of the Ice Cream Sandwich (88MB in size) which has been preconfigured for virtualization and features seamless mouse support for navigation, sdcard support and shared folders.

After download, extract the entire content to your desired folder from the downloaded zip file.

Then, locate the Android-v4.vbox file from the folder. Double click the file to load the VirtualBox application and boot up the ICS file.

Ready to run Android 4.0 ICS? If yes, simply hit the Start button and the Google’s mobile OS will load in a few seconds time.

You can now experience the Android 4.0 ICS OS from your computer. There are a handful of pre-installed applications and widgets that you can play with. Keep in mind that you will need to use the mouse to navigate, instead of using your finger.

However, there is still notable difference between running the ICS on computer and on the actual device (smartphone or tablet), especially in term of the performance. It is quite difficult to experience smooth performance using the Android 4.0 ICS virtual installation. Nevertheless, it does give you the look and feel of the ICS OS without the need to test it on an actual device itself.

Can’t get enough of the metro-style application? Previously we’ve written about the Windows 8 Metro Task Manager for Windows 7, Vista and XP. Today, we are going to look at other metro-style application, this time is the text editor.

Developed by Shane Gowland, MetroTextual is a metro-inspired text editor for Windows that is meant to provide basic text editing for users. It’s designed to be a visually appealing replacement for the Windows Notepad.

MetroTextual has a clean and minimalist interface. It is lightning fast at reading and writing text files because the application uses multi-threading technology. However, the application does not provide sufficient text editing options. There is the Word Wrap option, and you need to use hotkeys to carry out tasks like cut, copy, paste and undo. You can’t change the font or print the text.

In the settings, you can configure MetroTextual to always appear above other programs on the screen, plus there is a colour changer option that enables you to change the window’s colour.

MetroTextual is designed to work on Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP and Windows 2000 operating systems. Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 to run (version 3.5 will be even better).

Remove Old and Unnecessary Device Information from Your Windows with GhostBuster

Do you know that every time you connect a new device to the computer, Windows will store the information of the device in the registry, so that the next time you connect the same device to the computer, Windows can quickly recognize the device and load the device information automatically without any fuss.

However, if you have plugged in a wide variety of removable devices to your computer all this while, the Windows registry could be very much crowded with truckload of device information. Not just that, you could even experience slower Windows startup because of it. Now you know who’s the culprit that slow down your system.

So is there any solution for this problem? Well, we suggest you to remove the device information for devices that you are no longer using on your system. To do so, you will need a simple yet handy application like the GhostBuster. This application enables you to quickly and easily remove old and unnecessary device information from your Windows registry.

On the main window of GhostBuster, you will see a list of all removable media and devices. The devices are sorted into groups like Bluetooth radios, Disk drives, Portable devices, DVD/CD-ROM drives and more.

You will see the status to the right of each device. “Ghosted” means that the device is not currently connected to your computer, but recognized by Windows. In my case, I saw a number of unnecessary device information under the Disk drives group. There are a number of devices that I am no longer using and some of them were connected to the system only once and that was a long time ago too. There’s no reason why all these unnecessary device information should remain in the registry.

To remove unnecessary device information, you can select classes or devices (or use wildcard) through the right-click context menu of the devices list view, then hit the “Remove Ghosts” button to remove all the ghosted devices that matches your own selection criteria.

Keep in mind that only ghosted devices (grayed text) and devices that match the selection criteria (light orange background) will be uninstalled. All other devices remain untouched.

CAUTION : Because the backup and restore option is no where to be found in the application, you must have extremely careful not to remove any core system devices. Keep in mind that there is no way to revert the changes.

Get Windows 8 Metro Task Manager on Windows 7, Vista and XP

Unlike the previous versions of Windows OS, the Windows 8 is all about design simplicity. Just look at the Metro-style interface in the upcoming Windows OS and compare it to Windows 7 (or any older versions of Windows). Things are much more simplified in Windows 8 than in Windows 7.

One of the examples is the Task Manager. In Windows 8, you will see a simpler Task Manager. In the main window, you will see only a list of running applications with option to kill (or end) the application. Yes, you will see just that. In fact, most users (before Windows often use the Task Manager to kill non-responding applications and processes. Seldom people look at other information in the Task Manager.

Now, do you want to have the simpler Task Manager on your Windows 7, Vista or XP. The people over AskVG has created a Windows 8 look-alike Metro Task Manager. The application is lightweight and is portable too.

The Task Manager looks much the same as in Windows 8, just that the developer has added an extra “Restart Explorer” button to the portable application. Besides clicking on the “Restart Explorer” button to restart the Windows Explorer, you can use the hotkey Ctrl+P to trigger the option. Make sure the application’s window is active while pressing the hotkey. In addition, you can click on the More Details option to reveal the default task manager of your system.

Sweet and simple. Now, go and download the application to your computer.

Google has just announced the availability of the latest stable version of the Chrome browser for Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame. The Chrome 19 now carries version 19.0.1084.46.

Besides the usual bug fixes in every new version, Chrome 19 has one notable feature that many Chrome users would love to have it. Introducing the Tab Sync feature. This feature enables you to sync your open tabs in Chrome across all your devices (PC desktop, laptop, Android etc).

Take for an example, you come across an interesting webpage (or several webpages) on your Android smartphone using the Chrome for Android Beta app. And, you want to access the same webpage on your desktop. Using the Tab Sync feature, you can access the same webpage on your desktop without having to re-type (or remember) the url. This way, you can pick up browsing from where you left on your phone or any of your devices.

To enable this feature, you need to sign into the Chrome browser with your Google account. Go to the Wrench menu, then select “Sign in to Chrome”. And make sure you do so in all your devices. Where can you access all the synced tabs? Well, they are accessible from the new “Other devices” menu at the bottom of the new tab page.

iPad Wi-Fi + 4G is now known as iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular

Apple has decided to change the name of the new iPad Wi-Fi +4G to a less-controversial name, following a string of complaints from consumers in non-4G-LTE-supported countries, especially from Australia and the UK. The 4G-LTE compatible Apple tablet is now known as iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular. FYI, the iPad supports 4G-LTE networks in the US and Canada only.

See the name change in Apple Malaysia’s Online Store and other Apple stores as well.

Now, this is the right move by Apple, as consumers in countries outside the US and Canada will no longer confused with the term 4G. Although without the 4G-LTE connectivity, consumers can still connect the now iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular to any 3G networks worldwide.

Can we possibly relate technology and women, especially moms? Of course, we can. In fact, women’s interest in technology has surged within this couple of years. So don’t be surprised if you find moms who are as tech-savvy as you, or even more tech-savvy than you.

Now, let’s take a look at the report from Nielsen, named “The Digital Life of American Moms“. It shows several interesting facts regarding the online activities of American’s moms. The report also compares mothers to the average American.

The report indicated that American’s moms are actively participating in social media (Facebook and Twitter) with half of them access the sites via mobile devices (see, many moms own smartphones too). Facebook is the top social networking site among moms, at which three out of four moms (or 27.9 million of American’s moms) visited the site in March 2012. Moreover, they are also active bloggers in which about 1 out of 3 bloggers are moms. The top blogs among moms are Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr.

TweakNow DriveShortcut Automatically Creates Desktop Shortcut Icon for Your CD/DVD or USB Drive

I never really own a Mac computer, but there is one feature on Mac (and Ubuntu as well) that Windows users would want to have it in their desktop. On Mac, every time you insert a removable drive (can be an external hard drive or USB drive) or a CD/DVD into your computer, a shortcut icon pointing to the newly-inserted device will automatically appear on your desktop, giving you the convenient to access the files in that device. When the device is disconnected from your computer, the icon will automatically disappear.

To get such feature on Windows, you need TweakNow DriveShortcut to help you. After installation, TweakNow DriveShortcut will sit in the system tray and monitors your computer for any newly-plugged removable media. It can be an USB drive, CD, DVD, external hard drive or memory card.

When the application detects such removable media inserted to your computer, it will automatically adds a shortcut icon on your desktop. The icon points to that particular media. A click on the icon will display the content of the media. When the media is removed from your system, the shortcut icon will disappear instantly.

In the Settings window, you configure the type of removable media that you want the application to monitor. The application supports CD, DVD, USB drives, memory cards, external hard drives as well as RAM drives and network drives.

On top of that, you can also instruct the application to remember the position of the shortcut icons (for each drive) on your dektop.

TweakNow DriveShortcut is a freeware and is designed to work on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Windows 8. Other than DriveShortcut, Desk Drive is another similar application.

PIKOM PC Fair 2012 (II) Dates and Venues

The first leg of the PIKOM PC Fair 2012 has just ended on May 6, at Stadium Indera Mulia, Ipoh. Now, the organizer for one of the biggest IT and consumers electronics exhibition in Malaysia, has released their second leg schedule which will take place throughout the third quarter of this year.

The Pikom PC Fair 2012 (II) is scheduled to visit 10 selected cities and locations throughout Malaysia as early as 29 June, with Penang and Bintulu being the first two stops. The last stop will take place at Johor Bahru from 7 till 9 September 2012. Meanwhile, the main highlight of the event will be at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (as always) from July 13 to 15, 2012.

Amazing Alex is the Successor of the Angry Birds, Announced Rovio

So we already knew that Rovio Mobile has crossed 1 billion downloads for all versions of Angry Birds titles a few days ago. They’ve also released a video to celebrate the milestone and near the end of the video, Rovio Mobile teased us about their upcoming game title or should we say, the successor of Angry Birds.

You should noticed the yellow-hair kid from the video. Guess what, this kid will appear in Rovio’s next game title, called “Amazing Alex“. So this fella is called Alex.

According to BGR, Rovio’s CEO, Mikael Hed revealed to Finnish TV channel Yle that the game will have an educational element and revolve around Alex, a curious young boy who loves to build things. The game will be of high quality as the Angry Birds, as the people over Rovio want to maintain the high standard that Angry Birds fans have been enjoying all this while.

Regarding the availability of Amazing Alex, the game is scheduled to be released this summer on iOS and Android. Other platforms such as Windows Phone will follow next.

Needless to say, it will be challenging for Rovio to create a game to be so successful as the Angry Birds, but anyhow we hope that what’s the game has to offer will be beyond our expectation.

WordPress for Android 2.1 Comes with Comment Editing, Post Autosave and More

The stable version of WordPress for Android 2.1 is finally here, and is now available for download on your Android devices via Google Play Store.

We’ve mentioned about the new features and improvements of WordPress for Android 2.1 when we first reviewed the beta version last month. But it’s no harm to mention them again here. Among the notable features are the ability to edit comments directly from the app and the post autosave feature at which your article is automatically saved every 60 seconds.

Moreover, you can now set the width of the linked image in your article to any size you like. Previously, you can only link to a full size image. To activate the new setting, simply tap “Settings”, then tap the “Upload and link to scaled image” checkbox.

The app also comes with an all new WordPress.com reader (the Read option will be available if you have a WordPress.com blog). It’s now quicker to navigate between posts, you can add comments to posts and share the post to other Android apps on your Android device.

Other improvements include small updates to the UI, new app icon, reliability improvements, performance tweaks and translation updates.

Rovio Crosses 1 Billion Angry Birds Downloads!

Rovio Mobile has crossed the 1 billion download mark for all version of its Angry Birds games on all platforms! The cumulative downloads are counted from the download of the original Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio as well as the recently-released Angry Birds Space. Congrats to Rovio Mobile!

They’ve released a short video (22 seconds) just an hour ago to celebrate the milestone as well as thanking users for downloading the games.

Near the end of the video, Rovio Mobile teased that there will be “more amazing things coming soon”. Guys, this could be referring to new Angry Birds game titles.

At the mean time, Rovio, through the partnership with Nokia, is working on a Windows Phone version of Angry Birds Space and will bring the game (most probably exclusive) to Nokia Lumia smartphones.

It felt so good to be on stage at Saloma Theater Restaurant last night to receive our first ever blog award from none other than the Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen herself (our minister of tourism).

Thank you so much for the award, it’s a huge recognition for us to work harder and harder on our blog. In case you are wondering, we’ve won the Malaysia International Tourism Technology Blog award from MITBCA 2012.

Guys, tonight is the night that we’re waiting for, it’s the Malaysia International Tourism Bloggers Awards Presentation Night, where we will be there to get our first blog award – the Malaysia International Tourism Technology Blog award! And our minister of Tourism, Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen, will be there too to hand over the awards to all the winners!

Now, we are ready to head over the venue, which is scheduled to be held at Saloma Theatre Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur, from 7.30 p.m. till 10.30 p.m. We will post picture of the beautiful award here asap once the event is over.

At the mean time, please wish us safe journey to the venue, as it will takes around 3 to 4 hours to arrive. Thanks.
